Canary Islands with a camper – Gran Canaria

Die Kanaren mit dem Wohnmobil zu befahren ist für viele eine tolle Sache. Auch für mich war das etwas spezielles. Unsere Reise beginnt in Huelva, Spanien wo wir mit der Fähre von FRS in 38 Stunden nach Las Palmas Gran Canaria übersetzen. Da ich bei solchen Reisen stets zeitig am Hafen sein will, verbringen wir die Nacht vor der Überfahrt neben dem Columbus Museum in Huelva an der Muelle dellas Carabelas. Sehr interessantes Museum, richtig schön gemacht.

Discovering the Canary Islands with a camper is a dream for lots of people. For me, it was something special too. Our trip starts in Huelva, where we take the ferry from FRS which takes us to Las Palmas in Gran Canaria in 38 hours. As I always want to be on the port early enough, we spend the night before the crossing next to the Columbus museum in Huelva at the Muelle dellas Carabelas. Very interesting and beautiful museum.

Am nächsten Morgen um 11.00 Uhr legte dann die Fähre am Hafen von Huelva ab. Nächster Halt Lanzarote.

The following morning at 11 AM the ferry took off from the port of Huelva. Next stop Lanzarote.

Nach einem kurzen Zwischenhalt in Lanzarote schippern wir weiter Richtung Las Palmas. Gegen 22.30 Uhr erreichen wir den Hafen Puerto Nelson Mandela in Las Palmas. Die Überfahrt war lang so ohne Kabine – vor allem, wenn die Sitze nicht so ganz funktionieren, sprich die Fussstütze kaputt oder die Liegefunktion nicht geht… Tja, so ist das halt auf dieser Buslinie auf dem Meer :o)

After a stop over in Lanzarote we sail on to Las Palmas. We arrive around 22:30 PM at the Puerto Nelson Mandela in Las Palmas. The crossing was long without a room – especially when the seats are not fully functional, meaning the foot support is broken or the „lay down“ function does not work… Well I guess that’s what you have to cope with on a „bus line“ on the sea :o)

Pozo Izquierdo

Wir fahren Richtung Süden nach Pozo Izquierdo, dem Windsurferparadies auf Gran Canaria. Am Surferstrand befindet sich ein grosser Parkplatz, welcher immer gut besucht ist von Wohnmobilen. Wer nicht gerne Wind hat, sollte diese Ecke allerdings meiden. Wir finden den Ort sehr gemütlich, da wenige Touristen und sehr gute Retstaurants. Zu empfehlen für Fisch ist die Bar Pozo, welche direkt am Hauptplatz mit Blick aufs Meer liegt. Wer lieber ein leckers Stück Fleisch möchte, sollte ins El Rincón gehen. Die Cuba Libres dort sind ebenfalls lecker :o). Wer lieber Pizza oder Pommes möchte, sollte ins El Viento gehen, welches gleich neben dem grossen Parkplatz mit Traumblick aufs Meer liegt.

We drive south to Pozo Izquierdo, the windsurf paradise of Gran Canaria. At the surfer beach there is a huge parking lot which is very well visited by camper cars. If you don’t like wind, don’t go there. We like this place as it doesn’t have lots of tourists and very nice restaurants. If you like fish, we recommend the Bar Pozo, situated directly atnext to the ctown center with ocean view. If you rather like a good steak, go to El Rincón. There you also get very good Cuba libres :o). If you are more of a Pizza and fries guy, check out the El Viento next to the back parking lot with stunning ocean view.

Auch zu empfehlen ist ein Spaziergang zu den Salinen von Pozo Izquierdo. Am Strand entlang führt ein schön angelegter Weg zu den kostenlosen Salinen.

Aslo recommendable is a walk to the salinas of Pozo Izquierdo. Along the beach leads a very nice path to the free of charge Salinas.

Wasser füllen, Abwasser und Toilette leeren kann man ganz gut in EL Doctoral bei der BP Tankstelle. Auch Autowaschen ist dort möglich.

Playa de Burrero

Eine ideale Übernachtungsmöglichkeit finden wir am Playa de Burrero. Ein kleines Dorf mit einem schönen Steinstrand. Wenig Leute und zum Beaobachten von Flugzeugen perfekt ;o).

An ideal overnight stop can be found at the Playa de Burrero. A small town with a very nice stone beach. ONly a few peole and perfect for polane spotting ;o).

Presa de Chira

Um den vielen Touristen etwas zu entfliehen fahren wir in die Berge. Leider war es auf den Picos de las Nieves etwas zu kalt. Daher fuhren wir wieder hinunter bis zum Presa de Chira. Was für ein traumhafter Ort! Die Ruhe und die Natur sind der Hammer. Absolut empfehlenswert. Im Ort gibt es eine kleine Bäckerei, aber ansonsten gibt es hier keine Versorgungsmöglichkeiten.

To get away from the tourists we drive to the mountains. Unfortunately the weather at the Picos de las Nieves is bad. So we drive back down to the Presa de Chira. What a stunning place! The peace and nature are extraordinary! Very recommendable. In town there is a small backery but no other possiblity to buy something.

Castillo Romeral

In Castillo Romeral gibt es einen schönen Parkplatz direkt am Strand für Wohnmobile. Dieser liegt direkt an der Cofradía. Perfekt für frischen Fisch. Die Promenade und das Dorf sind sehr schön für einen Spaziergang. Im Dorf gibt es einen kleinen Supermarkt. Auch zu empfehlen ist das Restaurant Mama Gata mit einer sehr grossen Karte und Sitzplätze mit Blick aufs Meeer. Im Sommer laden die Meeresschwimmbecken zum Abkühlen ein.

In Castillo Romeral you find a nice parking next to beach for campers. It is next to the Cofradía. Peferect for fresh fish. The promenade and the town are very nice for a walk. In town you find a small supermarket. Also recommendable is the restaurant Mama Gata with a big menu and seating with ocean view. During summer time, the sea swimming bassins are inviting you for a cool down.

Ausflugsmöglichkeiten & Einkaufstipps

Mercadillo in Vecindario
Immer Montags und Mittwochs findet der Mercadillo in Vecindario statt. Eine gute Möglichkeit sich mit Früchten und Gemüse einzudecken. Der Parkplatz ist gross genug auch für Wohnmobile. Am Montag ist auch immer der grosse Markt mit Kleider, und sonstigen Dingen.

Always on Mondays and Wednesdays there is a market held in Vecindario. A very good possiblity to stock up on fruits and vegetables. The parking lot is big enough alos for campers. On Monday the market also offers clothes and other things.

Arinaga
Die Strandpromenade von Arinaga ist noch ein Geheimtipp. Wenige Touristen, sehr leckere kleine Restaurants und einen schönen kleinen Strand. Wenn man etwas gehobener Essen gehen möchte, empfehlen wir das Restaurant Faro in Arinaga. Traumhafte Location mit Hammerausblick.

The beach walk of Arinaga is still a secret spot. Few tourists, very good restaurants and a nice little beach. If you want to spoil yourself to a fancy dinner, we recommend the Restaurant Faro in Arinaga. Spctacular location with a breathtaking view.

Natürlich gibt es noch viele weitere tolle Dinge zu erleben auf Gran Canaria wie zum Beispiel eine Besichtigung der Hauptstadt Las Palmas, die Hafenstädte Agaete oder Mogan. Nicht zu vergessen die Südküste mit der Playa de Amadores oder Meloneras und die Bergregion mit dem Höhlenrestarant Guayadeque, ach ich könnte ewig weiterschreiben 🙂 Am Besten ihr fährt einfach mal hin, mit oder ohne Wohnmobil, Gran Canaria ist eine Reise wert.

Of course there are tons of other great things to do in Gran Canaria like visiting the city of Las Palmas, the port towns of Agaete or Mogan. Let’s not forget the south coast with the Playa de Amadores or Meloneras and the mountain region with the cave restaurant Guayadeque, well I could go on and on writing about it 🙂 Best is, go ther and explore it yourself, with or without a camper as Gran Canaria is always worth a visit.
