Normandie France

Auf diese Etappe habe ich lange hingefiebert: Die Normandie! Eine wunderschöne Gegend mit einer traurigen Geschichte, die man auf keinen Fall vergessen darf. Leider ist es aber auch so, dass es viele Touristenattraktionen gibt, die den Anschein machen, dass es hauptsächlich mit der „Ausbeutung“ dieser Ereignisse zu tun hat… Schon bei der Planung bin ich vom Angebot etwas überwältigt. Wir haben 2 Tage Zeit, also beschränken wir uns auf die Highlights: Utah Beach, Omaha Beach, US Gedenkfriedhof, Arromanches / Gold Beach und Juno Beach

I was so excited for this part of the journey: Normandy! A very beautiful area with a sad history we should never forget. Unfortunately there are also a lot of tourist attractions that seem to only earn money with this history… During planning I already was overwhelmed with the things to visit. We only have 2 days, so we focus on the highlights: Utah Beach, Omaha Beach, US memorial cemetry, Arromanches / Gold Beach and Juno Beach

Utah Beach

Erste Station auf dem Weg zum Utah Beach sind die Batterie de Crisbecq und Batterie d’Azeville. Leider war die Battrie de Crisbecq um diese Jahreszeit geschlossen. Daher konnten wir nur von draussen Fotos machen.War aber trotzdem sehr eindrücklich. Die Batterie d’Azeville ist zwar etwas kleiner aber auch sehr eindrücklich.

First stop on the way to Utah Beach are the Batterie de Crisbecq and Batterie d’Azeville. Unfortunately the Batterie de Crisbecq was closed at this time of the year. Hence we could only take picutres from the outside. Still very impressive. The Batterie d’Azeville is a bit smaller but still nice to see.

Danach fuhren wir weiter Richtung Utah Beach auf der D421. Am ganzen Strand gibt es diverse Bunker – kaum vorstellbar, dass an diesem friedlichen Strand mal so eine Grausamkeit stattgefunden hat. Am Strand befindet sich auch das Denkmal der Landung der 2. Division der USA.

We head on towards Utah Beach on the D421. Along the beach there are several bunkers – almost surreal to think about the cruelity that happended on this peaceful beach years ago. Also on the beach there is a monument for the 2nd division landing of the US.

Am Landungspunkt des D-Days besuchen wir das Museum. Sehr eindrücklich die verwendeten Mittel und auch die diversen Funde, die selbst noch in den 90er Jahren gemacht wurden, zu sehen. Interessant ist zum Beispiel, dass von den Allierten Brieftauben eingesetzt wurden, welche zum Informationsaustausch mit den Einheimischen in den besetzten Gebieten genutzt wurden. Daraufhin haben die Deutschen das Halten von Brieftauben unter Todesstrafe gestellt. Der Angriff der Allierten startete kurz vor Mitternacht und dauerte bis ihn die Morgenstunden.

At the landing point of the D-Day we visit the museum. Very impressive to see the used materials and the various finds that even were made in the 90ies. It is interesting that for example the alleys used letter doves to exchange information with the people in the occupied areas. The Germans forbid the keeping of letter doves by punishing it with dead. The attack of the allies started before midnight and endured till the morning hours.

Omaha Beach

Auf unserem Weg zum Omaha Beach besuchen wir den Gedenkfriedhof der gefallenen oder vermissten Deutschen.

On our way to Omaha Beach we stop at the memorial cemetry of the fallen or missing Germans.

Dann fahren wir zum Sektor Charlie Denkmal am Omaha Beach. Auf dem Weg dahin passieren wir einige Museen, wie z.B. D-Day Omaha oder Memorial of Omaha Beach Museum.

We drive on to the sector Charlie Monument at the Omaha Beach. On the way there we pass a few museums like the D-Day Omaha or the Memorial of Omaha beach museum.

Mit Aussicht auf den Omaha Beach wurde der US Gedenkfriedhof angelegt. Da es sich auf amerikanischem Boden befindet, gibt es hier für den Besuch des kostenlosen Museums Sicherheitskontrollen. Aber gemacht ist es sehr eindrücklich. Auch die Gedenkkreuze sind beeindruckend.

With view on the Omaha Beach the US memorial cemetry has been placed. As you are on american ground, you need to go through security when visiting the free museum. It is very well made though. Also the memorial crosses are impressive.

Gleich neben dem Friedhof wurde ein neues Museum errichtet: Museum Overlord. Draussen stehen einige Panzer und Landungsbrücken.

Right next to the cemetry there is a new museum called Overlord. Outside there are a few tanks and landing bridges to visit for free.

Als nächstes auf der Liste steht der noch sichtbare Bestandteil des Atlantikwalls. Dieser ist am Besten bei Arromanches zu sehen. Hier wurde der Port of Mulberry von den Engländern errichtet. Einer der Blöcke ist be Ebbe auch aus der Nähe zu besichtigen. Natürlich gibt es auch hier wieder diverse Museen wie z.B. das Musée du Débarquement.

Next on our list is the still visible part of the atlantic wall. The best place to see it is in Arromanches. Here the English built the Port of Mulberry. One of the blocks is even touchable during low tide. Of course you will also find museums here, like e.g. the Musée du Débarquement

Gold Beach & Juno Beach

Wir fahren weiter Richtung Gold Beach und Juno Beach. Wir passieren das 360° Museum bei Arromanches, wo eine riesige Landungsbrücke steht. Beim Gold beach also auch beim Juno Beach gibt es wieder Museen und einige Denkmäler. Für uns aber nicht so interessant. Also fahren wir zurück und gönnen uns eine leckere Pizza in Bayeux. Allerdings müssen wir etwas warten, da alle Restaruants erst um 19.00 Uh öffnen :o)

We head on towards Gold Beach and Juno Beach. We pass by the 360° Museum in Arromanches where a huge landing bridge has been placed. At the Gold Beach as well as at the Juno Beach there are plenty of museums and monuments. We are not so interested anymore in visiting any. Hence we head back and spoil ourselves with a very nice Pizza in Bayeux. However, we had to wait until 7 pm as all restaurants only open ant 7 :o)

Mein Fazit zu der Normandie: Sehr interessant und beeindruckend. Sollte man auf jeden Fall einmal gesehen haben – es gibt noch viel mehr zu sehen. Neben der Geschichte ist auch die Gegend mit den Traumstränden und den vielen guten Restaurants sehr zu empfehlen. Allerdings sind die Strände dann nicht mehr so leer vwie auf unseren Bildern ;o)

My conclusion to the Normandy: very instresting and impressive. If possible go and visit yourself – there is a lot more to see. Apart from the history the area with its breathtaking white sand beaches and the very good restaurants is also very recommendable. However the beaches may not be as empty as in our pictures ;o)
